How to use Website Visitor Tracking

Website Visitor Tracking empowers you to gain valuable insights into your website visitors' behavior, enhancing your customer engagement strategies. In this article you will read how to effectively use this feature.

Note: This feature is only available in the newest Chat Widget, not in the Website Widget Legacy.

Activating Website Visitor Tracking

  1. Access Chat Widget Settings: Log in to your Watermelon account and navigate to Integrations. Now select the chat widget where you want to enable this, and go to Placement.

  2. Toggle the Feature: Locate the "Track Website Visitors" option. By default, it's turned off. Toggle it on to start tracking website activity.

Understanding Website Activity in Conversations

  • New Tab: Upon activation, the tab named "website activity" will appear in your conversation view on the right-hand side will be filled with data.

  • Page Tracking: You'll see the specific pages your website visitors are on. Long URLs are cut off but hover over them to view the complete link in a tooltip.

  • Navigation: Click on the page link to open it in a new tab, enabling direct access to the visitor's current page.

  • Time Spent on Links: After a visitor leaves a URL, you'll see the duration they spent on that page.

  • Active Status: A green dot indicates an active user on a link or tab, offering real-time insights into their browsing behavior.

  • Total Page Visits and Time: Track the total number of pages visited and cumulative time spent by each visitor on your website.

How is it possible I don't see website activity?
If you are missing website activity, ensure the "Track Website Visitors" setting is enabled in Chat widget settings.

I have turned on Track Website Visitors, but I don't see any activity, how can this be?
After turning on website activity, if someone is already active on the Chat widget, the page with the chat widget needs to be reloaded to be able to view the current page.

Why does the data I am seeing seem incomplete?
After turning on website activity, if someone is already active on the Chat widget, the page needs to be reloaded to be able to view the current page. Occasionally, data might be incomplete due to network issues or visitor browser settings. 

Why do I see the visitor is still active on the link, while the browser is closed?
At the moment someone closes their browser, it may not be immediately visible in Watermelon. After 4 minutes, it will be displayed that the visitor has left the page.
