Hide Chat Widget on Mobile Device via Google Tag Manager

Do you want to hide the chat widget on a mobile device? You can do this via Google Tag Manager, and this article explains how to set it up.

Keep in mind that by not displaying the widget on mobile devices, you miss out on the chat functionality for your mobile website visitors. Therefore, consider whether this is truly desirable. Your Customer Success Manager will be happy to discuss alternative solutions with you.

Step 1: Create Variables

  • Go to Variables and click "New."
  • Give the variable a name, for example: Hide on Mobile Device.
  • Select the page variable "Custom JavaScript".

  • Copy and paste the following script:

  • Leave the format values empty.
  • Click on 'Save'.

Step 2: Link Variables to Trigger

  • Go to "Triggers" and click on "New."
  • Give the trigger a name, for example: Trigger - Hide on mobile device.
  • Select custom event under others.

  • Name the event ".*" and check "Use matching regular expression." 
    ❗️Please make sure to add the dot and star in the name. Without this, the code will not work.
  • Select "Some custom events" and set the trigger to "is not equal to" and "true."
  • Click on "Save."

Step 3: Tags

  • Go to "Tags" and click on "New."
  • Give the tag a name, for example: Watermelon Chat Widget.
  • Under tag configuration, click on "Custom HTML."
  • Paste the Chat Widget Code from Watermelon here.
  • Check "support document.write."
  • Under triggers, choose the newly created trigger.
  • Click on "Save."

Step 4: Send, Publish, and Test

  • Click on "Send" and select "Create and publish version."
  • Give the version a name.
  • Click on "Publish."
  • Go to the website on a mobile device and test if the widget is indeed hidden.
