Adding a timed trigger via Google Tag Manager

You can choose to have the chatbot appear only after a few seconds at a specific website URL. In this article you can read how that works!

To work with Timed Triggers, it is important that you place the chatbot on your website using Google Tag Manager. You can read how to connect your Website Widget to Google Tag Manager here.

  • From Google Tag Manager, click on your account.
  • You will then be taken to the Google Tag Manager workspace.
  • Select Tags from the left menu and click New at the top right.
  • Give your tag a name at the top of the screen.
  • Next, click on the top field 'Tag Configuration'.
  • A menu will unfold on the right side of the screen. There, select Custom HTML.
  • In the field below 'HTML' paste your chatbot code. You can get the chatbot code from the Watermelon platform. Below you can see how to do that:
    • Log in to the Watermelon platform.
    • Go to Settings.
    • Go to Connect/Modify Channels and select Website Widget.
    • Click on an existing Website Widget or create a new Website Widget.
    • Scroll down and click on View Code.
    • At the bottom, click the Copy Code button.
    • Go back to Google Tag Manager and paste the code into the field under 'HTML'.
  • Click Save and then click Save Tag.

Now that you have created the tag, we are going to add the Timed Trigger. This trigger will cause the chatbot to appear only after a certain number of seconds. Below you will read how to add the Timed Trigger.

  • From the Google Tag Manager workspace, select Triggers from the left menu.
  • At the top right corner, click New.
  • Give your trigger a name at the top of the screen (for example: 'Timer').
  • Next, click on the 'Trigger Configuration' field.
  • A menu will unfold on the right side of the screen. Select Timer.
  • Next you need to fill in a few fields:
    • At Interval, enter the number of milliseconds after which the Website Widget should appear (10,000 milliseconds = 10 seconds).
    • Under Limit, enter 1. This is the number of times the Timer should appear.
    • Optional: if you want the Timed Trigger to occur only on one or more specific website URLs, in the left dropdown menu under "Enable this trigger when all these conditions are met" select Page URL to. Then in the right field, enter at which URL the Timed Trigger should occur. "/prices" is already sufficient to place the Timed Trigger your website page about prices.

Finally, you need to make one more change to your Tag and then implement the changes. To do this, follow the steps below:

  • Again, select Tags from the left menu and click your created tag.
  • Click on the lower field Triggers.
  • A menu will unfold on the right side of the screen. Select Timer.
  • Click on Save.
  • Click on Send in the upper right corner.
  • Then click Publish

Now check whether your chatbot appears after the set number of seconds.

Tip: add different Website Widgets from the Watermelon platform, using different eye-catchers. Then add the Website Widget to specific website URLs with a Timed Trigger, so that your website visitors are encouraged in different ways to engage with the chatbot.
